Caring for Linen Bedding: Wash, Dry, and Preserve the Feel
Linen sheets are breathable, elegant, and only get better with time — if you treat them properly. Wash them the wrong way, and they’ll shrink, stiffen, or lose their signature softness. Here’s how to clean your linen bedding while preserving its lived-in luxury.
Step 1: Wash in Cold
Linen is a natural fiber that shrinks easily in heat. Stick to cold water and a gentle cycle.
Turn duvet covers and pillowcases inside out to reduce surface wear and friction.
Washing in cold also helps maintain the fabric’s relaxed drape and subtle texture.
Step 2: Use a Gentle, Brightener-Free Detergent
Avoid heavy-duty detergents or formulas with optical brighteners. These can strip color and stiffen the fabric.
I use this detergent — it cleans effectively without compromising texture.
Step 3: Air Dry or Tumble on Low
Air drying is technically best for preserving linen’s texture and longevity — but let’s be honest, it’s not always realistic. If you're using a dryer, tumble on low heat until fully dry.
Just avoid high heat, which can overdry and weaken the fibers. Linen holds up well with a gentle cycle, so don’t stress if hang-drying isn’t in the cards.
Additional Tips:
Wash linen bedding separately from towels or heavy fabrics
Skip fabric softeners — they can coat the fibers and actually reduce softness
After drying, smooth by hand or fold neatly while still warm to reduce wrinkles
