Caring for Vintage Levi’s: Wash Less, Wear Longer
Vintage denim has character — that soft, lived-in feel, the perfectly worn fade, and maybe even a backstory. But with age comes fragility. If you want your Levi’s to last another 20 years, here's how to clean them without breaking down the fibers or losing that hard-earned patina.
Step 1: Spot Clean First
If it’s just a surface stain, skip the full wash. Instead:
Use a damp cloth or sponge with mild soap and blot the spot
Let air dry naturally — never scrub or wring out vintage denim
For oil or food stains, a dab of dish soap works well. Just go light.
Step 2: Hand Wash or Gentle Cycle (Cold Only)
If the jeans need a full wash:
Turn them inside out
Fill a tub or basin with cold water and add a small amount of gentle detergent
(look for one free of brighteners or enzymes — like Tangent GC Denim WashLet them soak for 20–30 minutes, gently agitating every so often
Or use the delicate cycle in your machine (cold, low spin) in a mesh bag.
Step 3: Skip the Dryer, Always
Lay flat or hang by the waistband to air dry
Keep out of direct sunlight to avoid fading
Heat weakens the fibers, especially in older denim. Plus, the dryer is what causes that stiff, cardboardy feel.
Bonus Tips:
Wash infrequently — every 5–10 wears is ideal
Store folded or hung by the back belt loop to keep their shape
Never bleach, dry clean, or use high-alkaline detergents
